How to Make a Handcrafted Pen

Pen making is easy, especially with our pen kits. It requires a minimum of equipment and your pen can be finished in less than an hour. Just follow our simple guidelines and you’ll soon be turning beautiful handcrafted pens with our pen and pencil kits.
What is a Pen Kit?
A pen kit consists of all the parts required to make a pen - except the wood. It consists of the tubes, mechanisms, tips, clips and refills that are necessary to complete your project, (the bushings required to achieve the correct thickness are sold separately).
Our slimline kit is a favourite with beginners due to its ease of making. Exposed pen kit parts have finishes that give a different look to your finished project. These include 24k gold plate, satin, black enamel and platinum (rhodium plate).
The most common tube diameters are 7mm, 3/8’’, 8mm and 10mm.
A Lathe is Needed to Turn Your Pens
The modern mini and midi style lathes are ideal for turning pens and other small projects. Variable speed is a plus for fine tuning the lathe speeds when turning and finishing the pen and pencil kits.
The drilled and glued up blanks go on your mandrel. We have spare mandrels and mandrel shafts available on our accessories page.
